Agenda
- Opening Remarks -- Brian
- Issues considered by sub-committees:
- Outreach and Education (Ben Felzer, chair)
1- Review of HPC Day 2009 --Brandon80 people had pre-registered. Morning technical session had 22 attendees; keynote had nearly 60 people; afternoon sessions tapered off. Concerned if the weather had not been bad whether we would have overflowed room capacities. Consideration for next year as to whether we would need to close registrations . Also discussion on if ther eis overlap with the fall Computational Engineering Workshop planned (discussed below) and cost of HPC Day as to whether it will be put on again next year. No decision.
- Future Systems (Slava Rotkin, chair)
1- Present Shared Memory Systems that were quotes from Dell, Sun, Microway --BrandonPresented details on spreadsheet item - comparison of 3 vendor solutions (Sun, Dell, and Mircoway) for 16 core (AMD cpu based) and 64 GB of RAM. Discussion focused on who needed that many cores in their computations if machines were to be behind Enhanced Level 2 pay-for-cycle wall, and could schedule dedicated and sole access to machine. (Steve Lidie said there would be no admiinstrative issues implementing a schedule based on a dialy or weekly sized granularity of access. (Could not do hourly.) Condor cannot be used for interactive - used only batch kind of dispatching of jobs. We further decided that Brandon would get quotations for 2x 8core systems based on new Intel Nehalem chips, each with a minimum of 64 GB or RAM and 1x 16core machine (already have). Deadline is to purchase these by June 1, 2009.2- Variety of configs and quotations from same vendors for Storage Server (for extra 12 or 24 TB of NAS )With this extra storage being brought online, should be consider Service Levels for Storage?Sun has a 30 TB dual tape drive (LT04) jukebox for $17K off Academic Matching Price list.Brandon will get quotation from Sun on tape jukebox and 24TB storage applicance and forward to Gale and Brian as soon as possible.
- Strategic Planning (Brian Davison, chair)
1- Update on CEAS subcommittee work on computational engineering and scienceReported on work to hold a Fall workshop on Computational Engineering and Science over Pacing Break in October 2009. Planning is undergoing (approval received from Dean of RCEAS) - names of invited speakers and panel leaders are being collected. No Lehigh faculty - all invited. Expect Lehigh and drive-able attendees.
- Policies and Procedures (Peter Bryan, chair)
- Operations
1- Intel Compilers licensing expiring at end of Month of April --BrandonQuotations gotten for several scenarios.Decided to go ahead with 2x Intel Compiler Suite and 2x VTune preformance analyzer - all floating licenses for $3400 - cost to be split between Software Committee and HPC SC budgets.2- Status update on Condor/Inferno/Altair support for Abaqus - Brandon/Steve L. -no time3- Status update on putting new clusters into condor grid - Steve -no time
